ACROBATICS RULES
2023-2024 SEASON

“Dance brings people together”

COMPETE - TRAIN - EXPERIENCE - DANCE

We encourage our attendees to support one another throughout the event, encouraging young dancers to grow in a safe, supportive environment. Our aim is to ensure every dancer has the best time and hopefully will dance socially throughout that day; It’s not just about competing!

Top judges

We select independent judges who have a good knowledge in all styles, who we believe will judge fair and honestly but support constructively. When selecting judges we always select a judge who specialises in 1 of these 3 elements:

  • Acrobatics
  • Lyrical & Contemporary
  • Jazz and Modern
  • Team Rules

    ABILITIES

    BEGINNER U8 U10 U12 U14 U16 16+

    INTERMEDIATE U10 U12 U14 U16 16+

    ADVANCED U10 U12 U14 U16 16+

My team has mixed abilities, which category should they enter?

If 50% or more of your team are entering intermediate/advanced solos and duets, the team cannot enter in the beginner team category, they belong in intermediate/advanced teams.

Can I use aerial moves in my team routine?

If your team is in the intermediate/advanced category for teams, they absolutely can perform aerials (safely of course, there will be no mats).

If you plan to enter your team in the beginners category, no aerial moves permitted.

Points will be deducted if aerial moves are performed in the beginner section.

Skills that are NOT permitted in BEGINNER TEAM routines:

    - Aerial moves such as: Side aerial, front aerial, back tuck, front tuck

    - Back/front handspring, flying walkovers, handstand to chest roll, handstand walking, chest roll

Front/Back walkovers are permitted if they are performed by a small selection of dancers (<50%), not the whole team.

Down to bridge and kickover or handstand to bridge would be classed as the beginner alternative.

If judges determine that a Beginner team should be in the Intermediate section, they reserve the right to judge them as such and score them against the intermediate teams.

Costume and Preparation Guidelines for Dance Teams/solos/duets:

Participants must wear neat dance attire that does not leave any residue or debris on the dance floor. We advise selecting costumes with minimal attachements,  sequins etc and avoiding decorations like loose gems, rhinestones, or feathers, which might create dangerous debris or slip hazards.

Additionally, dancers are prohibited from using powder, talc, or any substances that could leave a residue on the floor, which could create a slipping hazard.

It's essential to ensure all costumes are chosen with care, considering both style and age appropriateness.

  • Tricks and Lifts - New

Welcome to the Partner Tricks & Lifts Section!

We are thrilled to introduce our newest section that focuses on Partner Tricks & Lifts. This exciting category allows dancers to showcase their creativity, teamwork, and technical prowess. Participants will work together with their teachers or coaches to choreograph short captivating routines that feature a set of partner tricks and lifts provided by CUO.

Competition Categories in various ages see below.

    Beginner

    Intermediate

    Advanced

Participants will choose the category that best aligns with their skill level and experience.

    How It Works

Each category will have a predetermined set of partner skills. These skills must be included in your routine exactly as provided.

You can find the set moves for your chosen category on our website under the "Partner Tricks & Lifts" section in our SET ROUTINES PAGE.

Choreograph Your Routine: Collaborate with your teacher or coach to choreograph a routine using the set partner skills for that level.

Your routine should seamlessly flow from one move to the next. Additionally, you have the creative freedom to add dance choreography in between the set moves.

Create a Repeatable Routine: Your routine should be designed to repeat. This means that the 6 counts of 8 choreography should loop seamlessly, allowing judges to watch the routine multiple times . The focus should remain on the  set skills , while demonstrating your unique dance style during the interludes

Movement, Dancers must remain within a 2.5-meter area to ensure that they do not collide with other dancers, The routine must be choreographed to remain in this area, Dancers will be disqualified if they travel outside of their area as this may cause a risk to other dancers.

Entrances and Exits: You have the creative liberty to decide how you want to enter and exit each set skill. Make sure your transitions are smooth and add to the overall

    presentation of your routine.

For the Partner Tricks & Lifts section, the choreography style is lyrical/contemporary, Dancers and coaches are encouraged to explore variations, musicality, and expressive movements within the framework of the provided partner skills. Any deviation from the provided partner skills may result in disqualification.

  • QUALIFY FOR UK CHAMPIONSHIPS

All our regional events are all qualifiers for our annual championships, click here for information on our qualifying criteria.

  • Matts and when we use them = Policy

This policy applies to all participants, coaches, staff, and volunteers involved in our competitions. It is particularly relevant to those involved in the staging and execution of acrobatic performances.

    III. Policy

Mats: Mats are a crucial element in ensuring the safety of dancers, particularly when they are learning and practicing acrobatic moves. However, in the interest of maintaining a high standard of performance and competitiveness, and given the proficiency of our intermediate and advanced level dancers, the following rules apply:

1.1. Intermediate and advanced level dancers mats are not requied  during their acrobatic performances in the competition, and therefore may not be used.

1.2. The non-use of mats applies to all types of acrobatic dances and routines, regardless of the complexity or difficulty of the moves involved.

Responsibility and Safety: It is the responsibility of the individual dancer, their coach, and their team to ensure that they can safely perform their routine without the use of mats. If a dancer or their coach feels that a particular move cannot be performed safely without a mat, it should be removed from the routine and a substitue move used instead

  • Across the floor - Updated October 2023

Acro-across the floor is a continuous movement from one end of the floor to the other, without stopping or travelling back up the mat. Balances are not allowed across the floor, as they will cause the dancer to stop and result in disqualification. Dancers are required to create their own combinations using the abilities specified for their level.

Judges: The judges will watch 1 lane each and choose their top 3* from each lane. There will be a total of 9 dancers to progress to a semi- final with a view to reduce the entries down to a final 5 which will then be placed 1st to 5th in their section, dancers must move forward and straight on their combinations only, and ensure they do not fall off the matts.

    * Depending on entries, we may need to bring more/less than 3 back per lane, This will be at the Judges and/or scrutineers discretion

Matts are used and cover a distance 12.5 metres, please train your acro dancers to cover this distance.

Music: We will play upbeat random music

    Tips for Creating Combinations:

Emphasise the importance of incorporating movement in between Acro skills.

Discourage repetitive skills performed continuously down the mat (e.g., multiple cartwheels, forward rolls,  back handsprings or step side aerials in a row).

Encourage dancers to connect different movements before or after their Acro skills to showcase variety and creativity.
